There is no long term commitment either. You can cancel at any time or you can upgrade or downgrade your plan at any time by going to "My Account" and selecting "Change My Membership Plan".

You can keep the games as long as you like, there are no late fees. When you are done playing the game, return it in the pre-paid postage envelope and your next game in your GameQ will be sent out.

I signed up for Gamefly's 1 month free trial and created my account. After creating my account, I started adding games to my GameQ.

GameFly's GameQ

Your GameQ is a list of games you have selected to be mailed to your address. The games on top are shipped first, when available. You can easily re-arrange the order of these games at any time.

For example, if you have 10 games in your GameQ, they will be numbered from 1 to 10. If you want to move the number 10 game to the top of the list, simply click the link that says "Move: Top". That game will now be listed first, and all other games will be bumped down. If you only wanted the game to be moved from the 10 slot to the number 2 slot, just type a "2" over the "10" and select the "Update My GameQ" button and it will be moved to the number 2 slot and all games below it will be moved down one.

GameQ also shows you a list of games that have been shipped to you, the shipping date, and a "Keep" button with the price of the game. If you decide you want to keep the game, use that button and you will be charged the price shown and the game is yours to keep.

GameFly Review on Video Game Selection and Video Game Console Support

GameFly has over 8000 games available for rent and their user interface makes it easy to find the games you want. At the top of the GameFly interface is a navigation bar that list the different consoles.

GameFly supports XBox, XBox 360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, GameCube, Nintendo DS, and Game Boy Advance. Hovering your mouse over one of the console names will bring up a drop down menu that allows you to select what type of game you would like to search for.

You can select from New Releases, Most Popular, Coming Soon, Online Enabled, Action Adventure, Arcade/Puzzle, Fighting, Kids/Family, Racing, RPG, Shooter, Sports, Strategy/Simulation, Multiplayer, or See All. Selecting one of these will bring up all the games in that genre. The default is to show 15 games per page. You can change this to show 45 or 75 games per page.

You can also change the layout from showing thumbnail images of the games, to just listing the games in text format. The images below show the GameFly search screen in thumbnail and list view.

Video Game Information

Under each game image is a "Rent" button, the game title, ESRB rating (Entertainment Software Rating Board), the release date, and the platform supported. Click on the game image or title to see even more details on the game such as:

  • Publisher
  • Genre
  • Keep price
  • Number of Players
  • Online Players
  • Online Enabled
  • Availability
  • Also Available on (other platforms the game is available for)
  • Buy Alert (select this to get an email from GameFly when the game is available to purchase)
  • Trade In (You can trade in games you own for credit toward your GameFly membership fees)
  • Member Rating
  • Rate This Game (allows you to rate the game on a scale of 1 to 10)
  • An option to write a review of the game

You can also view a larger image of the front and back of the game box.

And if that wasn't enough, there are also tabs for "Game Description", Critic Reviews", "User Reviews", "Videos", "Screen shots", "Cheats, Codes, and FAQ's", "Gameplay Controls", and "You May Also Like...", which shows you other related games you might enjoy playing.

I added 5 games to my GameQ. Two of them were "Available Now, one was "High", one "Medium", and one "Low". Here is a breakdown of what these mean:

High Availability: 75% or greater likelihood of shipping
Medium Availability: 50% - 74% likelihood of shipping
Low Availability: 25% - 49% likelihood of shipping
Very Low Availability: Less than 25% likelihood of shipping

We get a large volume of discs returned daily, so a copy of your requested game may become available during the day even if it is not listed as Available Now.

We'll always attempt to ship you the first available game in your GameQ. If your first choice is not available, we'll send the next available title in your GameQ, so we don't leave you without a game.

GameFly Shipping

GameFly will send out an email when a game ships and when they receive a game back from you. You can also select to receive these alerts by text message to your mobile.

I received two email notices a short while later letting me know that 2 games had shipped. Both games arrived in the mail the next day in great condition and I had no problems when playing them.

The next day I sealed one of the games up in the envelope and dropped it in the mail. The following day I received an email stating that GameFly had received the game back and another email stating that the next game in my GameQ has been shipped. It arrived in the mail the next day.

GameFly has distribution centers in Los Angeles, CA, Pittsburgh, PA, Tampa, FL, and Austin, TX, so it may take a day or two longer depending on where you live. I live in the Los Angeles area, so one day service is normal for me.

The games arrive inside an envelope, protected by a cardboard sleeve to prevent damage when going through the mail. You use the same prepaid postage envelope to send the game back when you are finished with it.

GameFly uses a system called "FastReturn". GameFly developed this service in partnership with the U.S. Postal Service to improve delivery times to GameFly members. FastReturn will start the processing of your next game as soon as GameFly receives confirmation from the U.S. Postal Service that a game has been returned in the mail.

If GameFly receives a valid U.S. Postal Service scan, you will no longer need to wait until GameFly receives the returned game in their warehouse before they send the next available game in your GameQ.

GameFly Dollars are applicable toward purchases of pre-played games only (inclusive of tax and shipping charges), to Keep games you have rented or to Buy games at the GameFly Store. GameFly Dollars expire 90 days after they are issued. Percent-off discounts are applicable toward purchases of pre-played games only (exclusive of tax and shipping charges), to Keep games you have rented or to Buy games at the GameFly Store. Percent-off discounts do not expire as long as you remain an active member.

Members will be able to download five new tracks for FREE every month. Non-members and GameFly visitors can download one free featured track every month. If you decide to use the "Keep" it feature on a rented game, GameFly will send you the original game case and manuals at no charge.

If a game does not have an option for purchase, you can set up a "Buy Alert" to be notified by email or text when it becomes available for purchase.

GameFly Trade-In Program
You can send in your used games for credit to your account. I could not test this function out, being a new subscriber. I get the following message:

Sorry, only renting members with at least three membership charges may participate in the GameFly Trade-In Program.

Summary

Pros - GameFly has the best user interface out of the three services reviewed on this site. They offer the largest selection of games and searching for games to rent or buy is easy to do. The amount of information available for each game, with user and critic reviews, game videos, screen shots, game controls, and more, is far superior than the other two services.

Shipping both ways was very fast. But I do live very close to one of their distribution centers, so your shipping times may vary.

GameFly pricing is competitive with the other services, falling right in the middle of the two. For the 1 or 2 game plans, they are a couple of dollars cheaper than Gamerang, my number 2 recommended service, and a couple of dollars higher than RentZero, the other reviewed service which I can not recommend at all. If you want the 3 or 4 game plan, then GameFly is significantly cheaper than Gamerang...$20 cheaper for the 3 game plan and $23 cheaper for the 4 game plan.

Cons - GameFly only offers support through email. I think it's important to offer phone support for your paying customers. I did send in a support question through there contact form and received a response back in less than 24 hours.

GameFly does not supply manuals with their rented games. They do have the game controls on the GameFly website for each game. Still, a printed manual would make things much easier.

GameFly does not sell new games, only pre-played games. This is not really a big concern as you can buy games anywhere. It would just be nice to use your GameFly rewards toward the purchase of a new game if you wanted to.

Conclusion

As you can see from this GameFly review, I was very happy with my experience with GameFly. My free trial has ended, but I have decided to keep using them for my video game rentals. I have no problem recommending this service to you as well.
